Common Prostate Problems

A number of conditions can affect the prostate over the course of a man’s lifetime. These conditions include inflammation or prostatitis, prostate enlargement or BPH, and prostate cancer. When we evaluate the prostate in the office, we perform a history and ask you about your urinary symptoms such as your urinary flow, how easy it is for you to go to the bathroom, and how often you get up at night and then we also perform a digital rectal examination.

A digital rectal examination is performed by placing a gloved finger in the rectum through which we are able to examine the backside of the prostate for tenderness, size and any abnormalities of contour.
