One of the things that I love most about medicine is the opportunity to work with the many other health care professionals who are passionate about patient care – especially our nurses.
In honor of National Nurses Week, please enjoy these heartfelt poems shared by students from my community at Spring Lake High School.
All Hope is Never Lost
By: Shelby Komar
Sometimes it takes more than an intelligent mind
It takes a patient heart to listen
Sometimes it takes more than a bottle of pills
It takes a soothing hand to hold
Sometimes it takes more than a diagnosis to inform
It takes a reassurance to enlighten
With ears to listen
Hands to hold
And words to guide
A tear can evolve into a smile
A trembling, weak hand can metamorphose into a clenched, able fist bestowing the message
“I am strong.”
And a worried mind can revolutionize into a lively soul
Nurses are more than medical assistants
They are listeners, optimists, gentle consciences, and friends
Nurses are more than full-time workers
They are superheroes with capes disguised as scrubs
And nurses are more than a face amidst all the hustle and bustle
They are mothers, daughters, fathers, sons, friends, and children
All sharing one common goal
To give us hospitality as patients
To share the words needed to ease our worries
And to immediately uplift by a big, toothy grin that assures us
All hope is never lost

Nurses’ Love
By: Jordan Smant
The angels of the night shift
The messengers of the day
They always give us a lift
Each individual does, in their own way
Nurses are an asset to the team
As if they were the thread to our seam
They have to be able to give good news and bad
Can you imagine telling someone they lost their dad?
We can’t imagine the act
Knowing that a nurse is an angel, is a fact
They always know what to do
They always know how to take care of you
They always have the perfect touch
They always care about us very much
Nurses deserve more recognition and fame
We need to pay more homage to their name
Not all of them are the same, but the Truth is what most proclaim
Without them we would be lost
It would be a huge cost
These are our nurses and they stand tall
We want them to know that we love them all
Thank you to Shelby Komar and Jordan Smant who are students of Dave Theune at Spring Lake Public High School in Spring Lake, Michigan.

Dear Dr. Stork,
Thank you for such a profound thank you to nurses. I think in part our character can be determined by the way we respect and treat those with whom we work. I highly respect the nurses I know, they bring another set of knowledge, skill and ability. Thank you for also highlighting the talent of Spring Lake High School students. What a wonderful way to share your appreciation.
Lisa
